The Prevalence of Autoantibodies in Systemic Lupus Erythematosus

Abstract
Systemic lupus erythematosus(SLE) is characterized by an exuberant immune response that is manifested by both the presence of multiple autoantibodies and their presence of high concentration in many cases. In SLE, antibodies to double-stranded
DNA
and
Sm are disease specific, and other antibodies such as anti-single-stranded DNA, antihistones, antinuclear, RNP, anti-SSA/Ro, and anti-SSB/La are not specific for SLE but may be detected in other diseases.
Ws detected the autoantibodies in 23 patients with SLE visited from 1994 May to 1995 April at Dong-A University hospital. The clinical manifestations were as follows: Cutaneous disorders(74%), renal involvement(48%), pulmonary involvement and
serositis(48%), central nervous system involvement(22%), hematological disorders(96%), and hypocomplementemia(83%). The prevalence of the autoantibodies was as follows: ANA(100%), anti-double-stranded DNA(64%), anti-Sm(22%), anti-SSA/Ro(71%),
anti-SSB/La(19%), and anti-nRNP(48%).
